What are the warning signs of cyberbullying?
There are many signs that may indicate that your child is a victim of cyberbullying. It is important that you closely monitor his technology use and observe any behavior that is out of the ordinary for your child. Many times, children who are being bullied never tell a parent or trusted adult. If your child is exhibiting signs that he or she is emotionally or physically stressed or his behavior has changed, seek help from a health professional or a school counselor.
The signs of cyberbullying mimic many of the signs of traditional bullying:
- If your child is visibly upset.
- He or she withdraws from friends .
- If your child's school performance declines.
- Your child tries to avoid school.
- He or she starts to withdraw from friends or activities.
- You observe your child suddenly changes friends.
- If he or she experiences a change in eating or sleeping habits (e.g. nightmares).
Additional signs:
Your child unexpectedly stops using the computer.
He or she appears angry or depressed after using the computer.
He or she appears jumpy or nervous when an email, instant message or text message appears.
Your child unexpectantly stops using the computer or other technology.
Your child becomes very protective or secret of his or her digital life.
